How Language Works
How Language Works is a comprehensive and innovative professional development program for educators seeking to extend their understandings about language and literacy. It assists primary through to senior secondary teachers to improve their students’ learning. It does this by dealing with the English language in a highly systematic way and by methodically building participants’ understandings of how language works to make meaning across a range of contexts. The completion certificate includes 30 hours of face to face learning (10 modules x 3 hours) and additional hours spent on between module activities and responding to readings.
Who is the course for and what are the prerequisites?
How Language Works is recommended for teachers of years 3-10 but is also highly relevant for teachers to make explicit the language and literacy demands of the SACE.
The course provides teachers and schools with:
- a model for a whole school literacy framework
- a model for planning teaching and learning sequences
- classroom strategies for explicit language teaching which teachers can apply or adapt
- an in-depth understanding of how language is used in different contexts for specific purposes across the learning areas.
- specific technical language or “metalanguage” to talk with their students about language and how it works.Teachers from all learning areas will understand more of the language demands of their fields and will be better able to teach their students how to deal with these demands.

“I have worked in education for over 30 years, initially as a primary teacher and an ESL teacher in both primary and secondary schools. Here, I became passionate about the explicit teaching of language and grammar and the difference it can make for students across all curriculum areas at all levels of schooling, and in their lives beyond school. I have worked as a curriculum officer in DFE, an ESL/Literacy Consultant for Catholic Education SA and since 2005 as a free-lance education consultant.”
Bronwyn is one of the co-writers of the How Language Works and Teaching ESL students in mainstream classrooms courses and was the lead writer of the Language and Literacy Levels across the Australian Curriculum: EALD Students.
